“…Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been
born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.””
Matthew 2:1b-2
Magi were learned men, usually wealthy, possibly actual kings. These were from out of
town, traveling from the east. Imagine how the Jewish leaders felt when the traveling
foreign scholars asked where the Jewish king had been born. “Wait… there’s a new
king of the Jews? Why didn’t we know about it?” The religious establishment was too
busy with their place in the current Roman world to be paying attention to their own
scripture. Later in Jesus’ ministry they were his greatest opponent. When we limit God
to our own terms, we miss His appearing.
God, please help us to trust that you know what you are doing. Help us to join your
work even if it feels foreign and calls us out of our comfort zone. Thank you for knowing
the big picture. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
